Uche James Iroha is one of Africa’s most creative photographer. He runs Photo-Garage, a hub for photographers to meet minds and network their career for prosperity. A feat he has run and garnered international recognition. Uche always have projects around him to run and ‘Contesting the Past’ is the new body of work the hard working lens man has come up with.

‘Contesting the Past’ is an exhibition by Africa’s ace photographer, Uche James Iroha. The exhibition is on going at the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State. According to the photographer, “this is a body of work created between 1998 -2018. Documenting and investigating the dynamics of culture as it concerns the New Yam festival of the people of ‘Item’ in Southeast Nigeria.” Uche explains further, “it was shocking to see that the crowd of participants have drastically reduced over the years. My gaze and plan is to present these cultural custodians individually, since it has become quite obvious that they are becoming lonely. It is a multilayered issue where one can find elements of religion and contested identities.”

Contesting the Past exhibition by Nigerian photographer Uche James Iroha runs from November 1st to January 31st
